Soviet-era food was a phenomenon in itself, where deprivation, ingenuity and traditions were intertwined. Since the store shelves were often empty or filled with certain goods only for a short time, the housewives had to be smart to bring the daily meal to the table for the family. At the same time, it gave rise to a kind of creative kitchen culture, where delicious dishes could be made from little. Despite the shortage, the tables were still full on festive days and we managed to conjure up the best pieces from under the counter. Although the Soviet-era food culture was born in conditions of scarcity, it left behind a lot of good and simple foods that are still valued today. Traditional Estonian dishes did not disappear from the menu at that time. Many people have an indelible memory of the cakes and cakes offered in cafes, which can still be made at home. Now we can happily prepare all these delicious dishes without having to chase raw materials from the store with a match!.
